Child and Family Studies offers bachelor of science (B.S.), master of arts (M.A.), master of science (M.S.), and doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in child and family studies. Students gain a broad knowledge of issues affecting child development and the family unit preparing to work closely with children and families in diverse settings.

On April 16, child and family studies majors were honored for excellence during a special ceremony. Each award presented is unique and recognizes students for academic success as well as promise and potential in the program of study or future professional goals.
CFS students share theory to practice experiences
On April 16 the Department of Child and Family Studies hosted its internship poster session for students taking CFS 494 where they share their experiences of putting theory into practice via their trifold presentations. Many participating students have had two separate experiences while others stayed at the same placement for both courses, each producing a rich and informative practicum experience.
Kimberly Raymond receives Syracuse University 2015 Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award
Kimberly Raymond, a doctoral student in Falk College’s Department of Child and Family Studies, received Syracuse University’s 2015 Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. This honor is given to recognize teaching assistants who have made distinguished contributions to Syracuse University by demonstrating excellence in significant instructional capacities as classroom teachers, laboratory or studio instructors, recitation of discussion section leaders, or assistants to faculty members for high-enrollment courses. TAs are nominated by their departments and selections are made by a committee of faculty from across campus.
CFS majors inducted into Kappa Omicron Nu honor society
The Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) recently announced eight high-achieving students were inducted into Kappa Omicron Nu, Omicron Alpha Iota chapter honor society for CFS majors at Syracuse University.
Best for Babies named NAPPA Silver Award winner
Best for Babies, written by professor emerita of child and family studies, Alice Sterling Honig, was recently named a Silver Award Winner by the National Parenting Publications Awards (NAPPA).
Music Education Majors, BMW Preschoolers Create Music and More
“Early experiences with music provide the foundation upon which future music learning and appreciation are built,” says Daria Webber, director of the Bernice M. Wright (BMW) Child Development Laboratory School in Falk College’s Department of Child & Family Studies. An ongoing creative collaboration involving BMW teachers and music education faculty members in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ (VPA) Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music, in conjunction with Syracuse University’s School of Education, recently connected college-aged and preschool students for a unique and valuable learning experience.
Internship reinforces the importance of advocacy
Ellie Prather ’15, a child and family studies major and health and wellness minor, was selected for and completed the Boston University Summer Study Internship Program in the Public Health and Social Policy Track. In addition to earning college credits, the experience guided her internship at Medically Induced Trauma Support Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting patients, families and clinicians who have been involved in medical error.
Dr. Ramadoss Presents on Work-Family Interface in India
With a research focus that includes the workplace and how it affects employees and their families, assistant professor of child and family studies, Kamala Ramadoss, Ph.D., was a featured presenter during the South Asia Center’s Spring Speaker Series earlier this semester where she presented, “Work-family Interface in India.”
Exploring community health, social policy
During the Spring of her junior year, CFS senior, Abigail Aaron studied abroad in Durban, South Africa, located on the western coast. The program she was enrolled in was entitled, Community Health and Social Policy. Her courses explored healthcare delivery including the practice, prevention and promotion of healthcare, as well as the role that the media plays on influencing the wide range of health topics in South Africa.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awards $25,000 grant to Kimberly Davidson, Dr. Jaipaul Roopnarine
CFS doctoral student, Kimberly Davidson, working with Jaipaul Roopnarine, Ph.D., the Jack Reilly Endowed Professor of Child and Family Studies and director of the Reilly Institute for Early Childhood and Provider Education, have received a $25,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Head Start Research Scholars. Their research project will explore how children learn about race and ethnicity and the roles that home environment, the neighborhood where they live and the child care programs they attend play in their racial and ethnic socialization.
Rachel Razza, Kimberly Raymond co-author chapter for International Handbook of Young Children’s Thinking & Understanding
CFS assistant professor, Rachel Razza, and CFS doctoral student, Kimberly Raymond, have co-written a chapter in the Routledge International Handbook of Young Children’s Thinking and Understanding. The chapter is entitled, Executive Function and School Readiness: Identifying Multiple Pathways for School Success. The Routledge International Handbook of Young Children’s Thinking and Understanding provides a contemporary and authoritative reference text on young children’s thinking. It brings together the expertise of influential, international authors from a variety of disciplines who share a high public profile for their specific developments in the theories of children’s thinking, learning and understanding. Supported throughout with relevant research and case studies, this handbook is an international insight into the many ways there are to understand children and childhood paired with the knowledge that young children have a strong, vital, and creative ability to think and to understand, and to create and contend with the world around them.
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services awards Elif Dede Yildirim, Jaipaul Roopnarine $100,000 grant to investigate relationships between child development outcomes and paternal engagement
Child and family studies Ph.D. student, Elif Dede Yildirim, working with Jaipaul Roopnarine, Ph.D., the Jack Reilly Endowed Professor of Child and Family Studies, has received a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families. The research project, "Paternal Factors and Childhood Outcomes: The Mediating Role of Relationship Quality and Support Networks," offers great promise for state and local agencies that focus on preventing developmental risks to children that are attributed to challenging home and neighborhood environments.
Study Identifies Key Components for Prevention, Intervention Programs for Adolescent Smoking in China
Falk College professors, Ambika Krishnakumar (Child and Family Studies) and Lutchmie Narine (Public Health) authored “Parenting practices and adolescent smoking in mainland China: The mediating effect of smoking-related cognitions,” which appeared in the August 2014 edition of the Journal of Adolescence. In collaboration with Dr. Yan Wang, Drs. Krishnakumar and Narine examined the direct and indirect associations of general and smoking-specific parenting practices with Chinese adolescents' smoking behaviors. Results suggest that parenting practices and smoking-related cognitions are critical components to be incorporated in prevention and intervention programs for adolescent smoking in China.
CFS students explore the benefits of sport for human development with UNICEF president Caryl Stern
For students in the Department of Child and Family Studies’ course, Sport and Human Development, a recent interactive class discussion focused on the power of sport in UNICEF’s day-to-day work with children and communities around the world. Dr. Terry MacDonald created and teaches the course, which examines the role sports play in positive and healthy youth development. During the Fall semester, she invited Caryl M. Stern, president and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, and Matt Meyerson, UNICEF senior director for sport partnerships, to meet with her students.
