School of Social Work Professor Honored by AARP

Alejandro Garcia, professor, School of Social Work was honored for his leadership and commitment to addressing diversity at the AARP’s National Policy Council dinner in Washington, DC. Hosted by Barry Rand, CEO of AARP, Garcia is former Chair of the National Policy Council and currently serves as a regional representative. He is also a member of the Executive Council of AARP New York.

As leaders in their fields in research, scholarly work and practice, David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics faculty are often consulted for their expertise on current events and contemporary issues. Additionally, many faculty members share their expertise, time and talents in the communities where they live and work:

Ellen deLara, associate professor in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, School of Social Work, was interviewed on April 22 by KLVI-AM Radio, Beaumont, Tex., on bullying as a reflection of incivility in our culture and the media.Earlier in the month, she was interviewed by WMOV radio (West Virginia and the Ohio Valley) April 15 on the impact of bullying on children's well-being and the responsibilities of parents, administrators, and community members in this phenomenon. She also conducted interviews April 13 with KLPW in St. Louis, MO, on the stressors placed on adolescents as a result of cybertechnology and its role in teen suicide and Boston Life Radio on the impact of the suicides in Massachusetts on teenagers and what parents can do to try to protect their children. Additionally, she was interviewed by WDRC radio (Hartford, CT) and KTSA-AM (San Antonio, TX) on the suicide of Phoebe Prince in Massachusetts and the connection of bullying to suicide.

Keith A. Alford, director of the B.S.S.W. program and associate professor, School of Social Work, was quoted in the March 10 edition of the Portland Observer in an article entitled, "Race Matters in Adoption."
Dessa Bergen-Cico, assistant professor of health and wellness in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, is quoted in the March 11 edition of the New York Daily News on teens’ use of inhalants.
Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, was quoted in the March 18 American Chronicle on Tiger Woods’ return to golf. Additionally on this topic, he was quoted in a March 17 article in Golf.com as well as in Associated Press, Newsoxy, Sport Business and McClatchy News articles.
Prof. Burton wrote a New York Times article on Stephen Crane, author of "The Red Badge of Courage," and his experience with baseball at SU in 1891. Burton is quoted in a Los Angeles Times article on the Dodgers and Manny Ramirez. He is also quoted in a March 6 New York Daily News article on the Jets-Giants Super Bowl XLVIII bid for 2014.

Eric Kingson, professor, School of Social Work continues to investigate the relationship between economics and politics and their effect on vulnerable populations. He served as a guest editor of the Generations journal special issue titled The Great Recession: Implications for an Aging America published by the Journal of the American Society on Aging. In the same issue, he co-authored an article titled The Economic Crisis: How Fare Older Americans?
Kingson has also written and had several letters to the editor published in the Washington Post and the New York Times.
Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management, was interviewed by the CBS Evening News regarding Tiger Woods in advance of his February 19 scheduled news conference. He was also quoted in The Telegraph (Calcutta, India), Sunday Telegraph (Sydney, Australia) and Associated Press stories on Tiger Woods' apology, and was featured on a segment on Bloomberg "Taking Stock" on the apology, sponsor reactions and Woods' golfing future. Golf Week included comments from Burton on Woods' apology from a PR standpoint. An interview with Burton was featured on NPR's "Only a Game" in a segment on Olympic sponsorships.

Tanya Horacek, associate professor, Department of Nutrition Science and Dietetics, is quoted in The Post Standard article, "Is the secret to weight loss on the pages of a diet book? And if so, which one?"
Chris Uyehara, culinary specialist, Department of Hospitality Management, was featured in The Post Standard article, "CNY ice sculptors win prestigious award in Harbin," which detailed the gold medal he received at the 26th annual Harbin international ice sculpture festival.

Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, is quoted in BBC, Associated Press, Economic Times, Los Angeles Times, ESPN.com, Golf Week stories on Accenture Ltd.'s exit from its Tiger Woods advertising campaign. He has also commented on Tiger Woods' relationships with key sponsors in the Toronto Star, the New York Daily News and the Associated Press.
Rick Burton, David B. Falk Professor of Sport Management, commented in the Washington Times on the potential of this year's Super Bowl featuring two undefeated teams.
Alice Sterling Honig, professor emerita of child development, commented in The National on boosting babies' brainpower.

Patrick Ryan, senior instructor of sport management in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, discussed on CNY Central TV news of the selected host city for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games on Oct. 2.
