Biography
Michael Veley was named the inaugural director of the Department of Sport Management at Syracuse University in June '05, and appointed Professor of Practice in July '06. Previously, Veley taught marketing and public relations courses as an adjunct professor in SU's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and Martin J. Whitman School of Management. He also spent nearly two decades working as a Division I athletic administrator at Cornell and Syracuse, including 10 years at SU where he implemented several marketing, communications and corporate sponsorship initiatives, generating a four-million-dollar-a-year enterprise. Veley's professional background includes extensive communications and sport management experience, including management of several NCAA tournaments. He helped establish numerous university and NCAA attendance records in men's basketball and men's lacrosse. Many of his innovative marketing and promotional ideas have appeared on ESPN television and in published textbooks. He is a three-time National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) award winner. Veley is a past member of the BIG EAST Public Relations and Promotions Committees and the NACMA sponsorship and membership committees. In April '06, Veley was presented with the "Founders Award," by the Department of Sport Management and Media at Ithaca College for his help in providing opportunities for sport management and communications students. From 1989-2005, Veley served as a mentor to nearly 150 college students who were interested in pursuing a career in sports. From 2002-2006, a student nominated by Mr. Veley has received a NACMA post-graduate scholarship award. Veley's distinguished fund-raising background includes many sport-related philanthropic endeavors, including working with the SU "Coaches vs. Cancer" campaign that has led the nation in money raised every year since 1996, generating over six-million dollars. Veley was named "Voice of the Carrier Dome" in 2006 and is the public address announcer for SU football, men's basketball and men's lacrosse games. He received a bachelor's degree with honors from SUNY Geneseo and earned a master's of professional studies degree from Cornell University.
