New traditions yield healthy eating habits at local churches

In ten Syracuse-area churches, fellowship event menus have deliberately gone from ‘traditional’ to ‘transformational,’ thanks to the Genesis Health Project Network—a community faith-based initiative that promotes healthier lifestyles among African American families in the local community. The Genesis Project recently hosted a Church Food Preparers’ Workshop at the Brotherly Love Church of God in Christ, one of the ten coalition churches working collaboratively with The Genesis Project at Syracuse University, its Department of Public Health, Food Studies and Nutrition, and Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Onondaga County. M.S. in Global Health

Beginning in August 2011, the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics began offering a master of science in Global Health, a 36-credit hour graduate program that is a key component of the educational programs making up the College’s signature in public health. Syracuse University alumna Cynthia Sass, one of the most well known and respected registered dietitians in the country, will present, “Stop Counting, Start Living,” on March 3 at 7:00 p.m., Heroy Auditorium, on the SU campus. At the American Dietetic Association’s (ADA) Food and Nutrition Conference (Boston, MA, Nov. 6-9), several presentations took place featuring the research and scholarly work of faculty, students and alumni from the Department of Nutrition Science and Dietetics. A poster presentation entitled, “Leadership, Mentoring and Retirement Intentions Among Dietitians in Central New York,” assessed the beliefs and attitudes of Central New York registered dietitians  (RDs) on the topics of succession, leadership and mentoring. Remembering Alice Reynolds ’60, professor of nursing emeriti, nurse-midwife, WWII army nurse

Alice Reynolds ‘60, professor emerita of nursing who retired from Syracuse University in 1984, died at age 90 on April 21, 2010 in  Syracuse. A memorial service was held on November 5, 2010 at Holy Cross Church in Dewitt. A valued member of many constituencies and an  integral part of the Syracuse University Nurses Alumni Association, Reynolds will be greatly missed. Born in Ossining, N.Y., she was sent at age sixteen to complete her secondary education in Liverpool, England. She began nursing school at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary and ultimately completed her program there since England entered into World Ward II…

New 60-credit M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy Announced

Students entering the master in marriage and family therapy program beginning Fall 2011 will be the first class to complete a 60-credit hour curriculum for a M.A. in marriage and family therapy, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). As a 60-credit program, the M.A. in marriage and family therapy meets or exceeds the minimum credit hour requirement prescribed by state licensing boards across the country.  Students must consult the licensing board in the state in which they intend to practice to determine specific course requirements. Assistant professor of child and family studies and teaching and leadership Eunjoo Jung, who is jointly appointed in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics and the School of Education presented at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) 2010 Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado. SPM students team with Syracuse Crunch for Mirabito Outdoor Classic hockey game

The Syracuse Crunch hosted the American Hockey League’s first outdoor hockey game, the Mirabito Outdoor Classic, against the Binghamton Senators on February 20 at the New York State Fairgrounds. Forty-five students in assistant professor of sport management Gina Pauline’s SPM 324—Sport Event Sponsorship and SPM 444—Sport Marketing Management classes played a role with Crunch staff in all facets of the event.
