Students at Syracuse University’s Falk College have dedicated their lives to helping individuals, families, and communities through careers in nutrition and food studies, social work, marriage and family therapy, public health, and human development. When they find the right career path, we all benefit. The Falk College Office of Career Services helps students and alumni connect to impactful career opportunities that match their skillset and interests.
When you make a gift to Falk Career Services, you make this possible by supporting personalized guidance, resources, experiences, and professional networking opportunities. Now is the perfect time to give because 20 students are headed to Washington DC for a Career Immersion Trip October 27 to October 30. You can support them as they meet with alumni and potential employers in businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies.

Attending the Career Immersion Trip
The resources and workshops offered at Falk Career Services have given me so much perspective and knowledge. Workshops that involve face-to-face networking help you gain confidence and comfort in networking environments. The Career Immersion Trip to DC will be the first career exploration opportunity I’ve ever had. It could become the opportunity of a lifetime for changing not only my future but the future of generations to come. Success and finding a dream job have always been two of my most highly anticipated goals in life. This opportunity is the first step in achieving my dream!
Post graduation, I would like to gain some work experience in the field before I go back to school for a master’s degree. My long-term goal is to develop my own nonprofit organization that helps teach presentation skills, resume building, and networking to inner-city middle and high school students. These are skills that I am building now in both my business fraternity and as a peer career coach in Falk College.

Attending the Career Immersion Trip
I have found Falk Career Services’ resume help and workshops to be especially helpful! Earlier this fall I attended the Networking Workshop, which helped me sharpen my pitches so I’m more confident going into networking events. After graduation, I plan to work with a nonprofit and my long-term career goal is to work in a health profession. I am excited about the Career Immersion Trip specifically to see all of the different directions I can take my degree after graduation, especially because we have the opportunity to visit with many health-focused nonprofits, which is my area of interest.

Attending the Career Immersion Trip
I have utilized one-on-one appointments and workshops with Falk Career Services. I have found both experiences very valuable to my overall search for a meaningful career and what it will take to get there. I prefer one-on-one appointments because they allow for more personalized feedback and information, however it is also nice to attend workshops with other students because it makes me feel like I’m not the only one in the career search process.
At the Syracuse University Career Fair, I don’t have the chance to see the facility in which an organization operates, so I am very excited for the unique opportunity that the Career Immersion Trip is presenting me. I am interested to visit with the employers in DC because I think they will be able to answer my questions about career opportunities that fit both my on-the-ground and managerial interests. Additionally, I hope to bring back some of the information on the success of those organizations so that I might be able to help some organizations in the Syracuse community. After graduation, I will pursue a master of public health (MPH) degree at Syracuse University. Long-term, I want to work with nonprofit health organizations and have a role that is both on-the-ground with clients as well as more managerial in a fundraising position.

Networking and generally just being outgoing in talking to new people has never been my strong suit. The Networking Workshop forced me to go out of my comfort zone and communicate my goals to complete strangers within the span of 45 minutes. By the end of the single event, I noticed a significant difference in the way I presented myself after learning that people were interested and actually listening. By getting to work one-on-one with Falk Career Services advisors, I really felt like the campus cared about me and my success. Navigating classes and career paths is a daunting activity that I could never imagine figuring out on my own. I consider the advice of my advisors in Falk Career Services very heavily, and by doing so I feel much more confident that I am in the right place, doing the right thing, and on the right track with where I want to be.
After earning my bachelor degree, I strive to serve in the Peace Corps for at least one two-year-term. After my service there, I would like to obtain a master of social work (MSW) degree. Long-term, I see myself using my voice, knowledge, and skill to serve in community health at the front line, working directly with individuals who are are facing adversities such as domestic violence, poverty, mental and physical health issues, inequity, and so forth.
The Career Immersion Trip trip will allow me to connect with students and alumni that I have never met, which I find so interesting as it almost always adds a viewpoint to your outlook from a perspective you’ve never seen before. I’m very much looking forward to exploring the different areas of internship opportunities available for the near future and ultimately job positions that would best suit my aspirations. I could read about different job titles available for students with my degree all day any day, but reading job descriptions on a screen is nothing compared to first-hand opportunity and experiences. Visiting the employer sites, speaking with employees, and visually seeing day-to-day operations being carried out is the best way to determine if a job is fitting for you.

What I find to be most helpful about Falk Career Services is how accessible all of the advisors are and how willing they are to help you reach your goals for the future. I have met with the Falk Career Services advisors many times and have used a variety of their resources on how to build a resume and cover letter effectively. My long-term career dream is to be able to help children and families through a non-profit organization that I hope to run in the future.
