For nearly two decades, Falk College students from the Sport Management Club have hosted a Sports Charity Auction that has raised more than $600,000 for local nonprofit organizations. We are extremely proud of these students, who through this registered student organization have impacted thousands of lives in our community and fulfilled the Falk mission of making our world a better place.
In April, the Sport Management Club selected Vera House as the beneficiary of its 18th annual Sports Charity Auction in December. That decision was made before the events of this past summer, when it was revealed that Vera House had employed a registered sex offender from October 2020 to July 2022. Satisfied with the changes made by the Vera House Board of Directors to address this issue and recognizing the continued need to support the victims of domestic and sexual violence and other forms of abuse, the Sport Management Club has decided to keep Vera House as the auction beneficiary.
Social justice principles are the backbone of Falk College. I admire the students for maintaining their focus on the goal they set for this year’s auction, which is to support the victims and survivors in our community who rely on Vera House’s services. I value the autonomy of the club and the careful thought that went into this process, and I fully support the students’ decision to retain Vera House as the beneficiary of this year’s auction.
This statement from the Sport Management Club fully explains the club’s decision.
