Several courses within the Falk College will benefit from a Bringing Theory to Practice grant aimed at studying the psychological and social well-being of college students. The Bringing Theory to Practice Project (BTtoP) awarded more than $700,000, including campus matching grants, to the colleges to address two key questions: How does learning on college campuses support the psychosocial development of students, and how and why does intentional commitment to the well-being of all students positively affect their learning and civic involvement? The recent gift of a generous Syracuse University alumna and her family is bringing a big smile to the Bernice M. Wright (BMW) Child Development Laboratory School every day. Literally. Earlier this month, a 12-foot blue and orange ‘happy face’ sculpture was installed outside of the BMW Lab School on South Campus, a gift from Shelly and Scot Fisher. Shelly is an alumna of the Newhouse School as is their son, Sam. The artist, Scott Gerber, created the piece in his studio in Sarasota, Florida. Students in the Department of Sport Management, led by instructor Pat Ryan, are traveling across Europe this May as part of the SPM Olympic Odyssey trip. Transforming the traditional classroom across geographies, time zones and cultures, this hands-on European exploration of the Olympic movement investigates the history of the ancient and modern Olympic Games and their influence on modern sport through in-depth study of Olympics sites. The group will visit London, Paris, Lausanne, Olympia and Athens.
This course explores the biological processes that undergird the food production system on which we all depend. Course topics include soil fertility and quality, pest ecology, nutrient cycling and socioeconomic and policy aspects of agricultural production. The course will address questions like: What is Agroecology? How important is soil health and quality for the food we eat? What can we do to control insect and week pests and plant pathogens? On Saturday, April 5, students in the Falk College’s hospitality management program hosted family, friends, faculty, administrators and members of the hospitality industry for the 11th Annual Senior Class Gala. The event, which was themed “The Great Gatsby,” was held at the Goldstein Alumni and Faculty Center. The students work with faculty and staff to develop a budget, create invitations, plan the menu and fully execute a unique culinary experience for the event’s guests. Students in the Falk College’s new graduate course, FST 700—Gender, Food, and Rights attended the United Nations’ (UN) annual Committee on the Status of Women (CSW) meetings over Spring Break. Led by food studies professor, Anne Bellows, three students, Melanie Shaffer-Cutillo, Karen Cordano, and Stacia Martelli canvassed official meetings on issues related to women’s human right to adequate food and nutrition as official delegates of the non-governmental organization, Food First Information Action Network (FIAN) International. The Falk College, in conjunction with two of its student organizations, Kappa Omicron Nu, the national honor society program for CFS majors at Syracuse University and the Syracuse University chapter of the Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE) worked together to raise awareness and money to support the McMahon-Ryan Child Advocacy Site during Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is commemorated in April. Last week the group collected donations for paper pinwheels and blue wristbands. On Sunday, April 13, the group planted the pinwheel garden in between the Schine Student Center and Newhouse.
Rachel Razza, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Child & Family Studies in the Falk College, was named a Syracuse University 2014 Teaching Recognition Award as part of the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professorship Program. This honor recognizes excellence in teaching innovation, effectiveness in communicating with students and the lasting value of courses.
