The Commission on Accreditation (COA) has reaffirmed the Syracuse University School of Social Work’s baccalaureate and master of social work programs’ accreditation for eight years (through 2019). Founded in 1956, the School of Social Work has a long and very distinguished history of social work education. The School of Social Work is dedicated to educating practitioners grounded in social work values and evidence-informed practice to respond to human service needs and to foster strengths in local, state, national and global communities.
As part of his coursework, student-athlete Kris Joseph, a child and family studies major and a senior forward on the SU Men’s Basketball team, is currently enrolled in CFS 433—Child Practicum. Taught by internship placement coordinator Colleen Baish, this semester-long practicum requires students to spend 90 hours in a school, agency, or program. “This is something I really enjoy doing, and it is fun,” notes Joseph. As a result of its most successful annual Charity Sport Auction to date in December 2011, the Syracuse University Sport Management (SPM) Club made a $30,444 gift to the Upstate Cancer Center at Upstate Medical University during the SU Men’s basketball game vs. University of South Florida on February 22. The Syracuse University Sport Management (SPM) Club held its Seventh Annual Charity Sport Auction on Saturday, December 10 at the Carrier Dome. Silent bidding took place on hundreds of auction items, including sports memorabilia and hands-on experiences, electronics and tickets to major sporting events, during the SU men’s basketball game against George Washington. All the proceeds from this year’s auction went to benefit the Upstate Cancer Center. Items not sold in the December 10th Silent Auction were available in an After Action Sale until December 21st. Combining historically accurate military and espionage details, David B. Falk professor of sport management Rick Burton ’79 published The Darkest Mission. The novel follows the crew of a doomed 100th Bomb Group B-17 bomber through a 50-year odyssey targeting one of America’s most honored public figures. With a whirlwind plot, it falls to a South Boston detective, turning to an NFL-linebacker-turned-priest, to explain one clue (a Bible verse that does not exist). It leads to a series of gritty homicides and a puzzle-filled plot that ends with a blazing conclusion.
Sport management instructor Patrick Ryan serves as a community advisor for the Syracuse City School District’s Institute of Technology. This program is focused on developing the skills that will prepare Syracuse high school students for future careers in Central New York.
On April 17, the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics hosted approximately 30 admitted students invited to join the Class of 2015 as part of Syracuse University’s Multicultural Admitted Student Spring Reception. The evening gave students an opportunity to meet one another as well as hear from the dean of the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics , Diane Lyden Murphy, and College Admissions director, Felicia Otero and recruiting specialist Annette Hodgens, along with other faculty and staff of the College. The gathering included a special dinner from Syracuse’s world-famous Dinosaur Barbecue restaurant.
