Dr. Alejandro Garcia, the Jocelyn Falk Endowed Professor of Social Work, was honored on October 15 at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Latino and Latina Social Work Educators in Denver, Colorado. He received the first Lifetime Achievement Award offered by ALLSWE for his leadership and contributions to social work practice and education and his advocacy for Latinos throughout his career.
The Sport Management (SPM) Club at Syracuse University announced The Salvation Army® of Syracuse as the beneficiary of its 11th Annual Charity Sports Auction. On Friday, November 20th, 2015 the Marriage and Family Therapy department hosted an introductory workshop for social service practitioners, teachers, nurses, physicians, police, juvenile justice workers, marriage and family therapists, social workers, mental health counselors, and child specialists who work in high-violence, traumatized neighborhoods in the Syracuse area. This workshop served as the introductory module of a multiple-phase training program in trauma-informed practice. As part of the Research Education for Undergraduates (REU) program, a collaborative venture between Syracuse University’s Falk College, SUNY Oswego, and SUNY Upstate Medical University, volunteers are sought for a research study regarding veterans. Participants (18-64 years old) who are veterans are needed to answer online questionnaires and provide small samples of hair and saliva for testing. The purpose of this study is to find links between genetic biomarkers and measures of stress and well-being in veterans. Participants will receive up to $75 as compensation. No travel is required. On Friday, October 23, Falk College Dean, Diane Lyden Murphy, along with students, faculty, and staff, will lead a special dedication ceremony to commemorate the opening of the new home of the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. The event will take place at 2:00 p.m. directly in front of the courtyard linking MacNaughton and White Halls, which formerly housed the College of Law.
