Since its founding in 2005, the Sport Management (SPM) Club at Syracuse University, a student-run organization in the Falk College’s Department of Sport Management, has donated nearly $200,000 to local Central New York charities. As a result of its most successful annual sport auction held in December 2012, the SPM Club made a $35,239 gift to Special Olympics New York, the largest donation ever generated from the auction’s eight-year history. Sport management and psychology double major Sarah Costello was named a Remembrance Scholar for 2012-13. The Remembrance Scholarships, among the most prestigious scholarships awarded by Syracuse University, were founded as a tribute to the 270 people, including 35 students studying abroad through Syracuse University, who were killed in the Dec. 21, 1988, bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The scholarships are funded through an endowment supported by gifts from alumni, friends, parents and corporations. CFS Students Visit Trinidad-Tobago & SPM Students Travel to LA For the second year in a row, students in both Child and Family Studies and Sport Management will participate in immersion programs related to their majors during Spring Break 2012. Students majoring in child and family studies will be traveling to Trinidad and Tobago to orient them to educational systems in these Caribbean areas. As a result of its most successful annual Charity Sport Auction to date in December 2011, the Syracuse University Sport Management (SPM) Club made a $30,444 gift to the Upstate Cancer Center at Upstate Medical University during the SU Men’s basketball game vs. University of South Florida on February 22. The Syracuse University Sport Management (SPM) Club held its Seventh Annual Charity Sport Auction on Saturday, December 10 at the Carrier Dome. Silent bidding took place on hundreds of auction items, including sports memorabilia and hands-on experiences, electronics and tickets to major sporting events, during the SU men’s basketball game against George Washington. All the proceeds from this year’s auction went to benefit the Upstate Cancer Center. Items not sold in the December 10th Silent Auction were available in an After Action Sale until December 21st.
