In the 1990s, Falk College sport management professor, Chad McEvoy, Ed.D., was a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst working closely with Dr. William A. Sutton, a distinguished academician and practitioner recognized for his visionary leadership connecting the sport marketing academic discipline to the industry. McEvoy will receive the 2014 Sutton Award from the Sport Marketing Association (SMA) named in honor of his teacher and mentor in recognition of exceptional contributions to sport marketing academics and the industry. The Sport Management (SPM) Club at Syracuse University will hold its Tenth Annual Charity Sports Auction Saturday, December 6 at the Carrier Dome. Silent bidding on hundreds of auction items, including sports memorabilia and hands-on experiences, electronics and tickets to major sporting events, will take place in the backcourt during the SU men’s basketball game against St John’s University. Several courses within the Falk College will benefit from a Bringing Theory to Practice grant aimed at studying the psychological and social well-being of college students. The Bringing Theory to Practice Project (BTtoP) awarded more than $700,000, including campus matching grants, to the colleges to address two key questions: How does learning on college campuses support the psychosocial development of students, and how and why does intentional commitment to the well-being of all students positively affect their learning and civic involvement? Students in the Department of Sport Management, led by instructor Pat Ryan, are traveling across Europe this May as part of the SPM Olympic Odyssey trip. Transforming the traditional classroom across geographies, time zones and cultures, this hands-on European exploration of the Olympic movement investigates the history of the ancient and modern Olympic Games and their influence on modern sport through in-depth study of Olympics sites. The group will visit London, Paris, Lausanne, Olympia and Athens.
