On April 14, the School of Social Work held its Phi Alpha Honor Society, Zeta Gamma Chapter, induction ceremony at Maxwell Auditorium. Nineteen undergraduate and 17 graduate social work students joined Phi Alpha this academic year. Professor of practice, Tracey Marchese, was the keynote speaker. Awards were presented by Bette Brown Thoreck, director, Baccalaureate social work program. The concept of a National Social Work Honor Society came from a group of undergraduates at Michigan State University. Dan Gorman ’15, 2013-14 president of the Sport Management Club, and Hannah Visnosky, ’16, vice president of community service, recently accepted the Student Organization Philanthropy Award at the 2014 “44 Stars of Excellence Gala.” The group was honored for philanthropy work raising and contributing funds for nationally recognized or local charities and agencies. The SPM Club held its 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction in December, raising $30,500 for Food Bank of Central New York.

Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Endowed Professor of Sport Management, was appointed as the University Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA effective July 1. The Faculty Athletics Representative reports to Chancellor Syverud and is an institutional liaison to Syracuse Athletics as well as a representative of the University in conference and NCAA matters. Key issues this position has focused on in the past include overall student-athlete welfare, compliance with new and ongoing NCAA legislation, and generally advocating for the best interests of the University and its constituencies. Openings are now available at the Bernice M. Wright Child Development Laboratory School(BMW Lab School). Our newly renovated South Campus facility houses four classrooms, large motor areas, therapy spaces, kitchen and specialized curriculum areas, such as an art studio, woodworking room and library. Classes are offered 9 a.m.-noon for toddlers and preschoolers. An extended-day program from either 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. is offered for preschoolers, only. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the School of Social Work in the Falk College at SU, began its annual commemoration of National Professional Social Work Month on March 1. The NASW designated March as National Social Work Month in the 1960s to provide recognition and voice for social workers who represent one of the largest professions in the country.
