The Syracuse Sports Corporation, along with the graduate students in the Sport Venue and Event Management master’s program at Syracuse University’s Falk College, will host the 2015 Syracuse Sport Summit on Thursday, April 30 at Drumlins Country Club, 800 Nottingham Road The event aims to spark discussion about the integration of disabled citizens, particularly wounded military veterans, into the community through the use of adaptive sports. The Alan B. Mirken NYC Social Work Immersion Trip took place April 1-3. The annual “Roots of American Social Work” immersion program included students and faculty in Falk College’s School of Social Work. The group visited numerous sites of social work significance, including Mount Sinai Hospital, Goddard Riverside Community Center(which began as one of the first Settlement Houses in NYC),The LGBTQ Center, and the Lower Eastside Tenement Museum, which helps students to learn how U.S. social welfare developed. FST 402 recognized with 2015 Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement and Service In recognition of teaching excellence, Evan Weissman, Ph.D., assistant professor of food studies, was honored with the 2015 Teaching Recognition Award as part of the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professorship Program. On April 10, the School of Social Work held its Phi Alpha Honor Society, Zeta Gamma Chapter, induction ceremony at Hendricks Chapel. Thirteen undergraduate and 11 graduate social work students joined Phi Alpha this academic year. Dr. Karen Kirkhart, professor of social work, was the keynote speaker. On Friday, April 24, Falk College and its Department of Sport Management will host “Sport and the Pursuit of Healthiness,” a multimedia symposium on how public health concerns are affecting sports participation and what is being done to make sports safer. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4:00 p.m. in Grant Auditorium. Food studies learning assistant and Syracuse University graduate student, Cody Allen Dedischew, was the suite chef for the UPS and Rolex suites during the 2015 Master Golf Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. In his senior year of college at Johnson and Wales University, he had the opportunity to go with a group of students to work the Master. On April 16 the Department of Child and Family Studies hosted its internship poster session for students taking CFS 494 where they share their experiences of putting theory into practice via their trifold presentations. Many participating students have had two separate experiences while others stayed at the same placement for both courses, each producing a rich and informative practicum experience.
