On April 10, the School of Social Work held its Phi Alpha Honor Society, Zeta Gamma Chapter, induction ceremony at Hendricks Chapel. Thirteen undergraduate and 11 graduate social work students joined Phi Alpha this academic year. Dr. Karen Kirkhart, professor of social work, was the keynote speaker. On Friday, April 24, Falk College and its Department of Sport Management will host “Sport and the Pursuit of Healthiness,” a multimedia symposium on how public health concerns are affecting sports participation and what is being done to make sports safer. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4:00 p.m. in Grant Auditorium. Food studies learning assistant and Syracuse University graduate student, Cody Allen Dedischew, was the suite chef for the UPS and Rolex suites during the 2015 Master Golf Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. In his senior year of college at Johnson and Wales University, he had the opportunity to go with a group of students to work the Master. On April 16 the Department of Child and Family Studies hosted its internship poster session for students taking CFS 494 where they share their experiences of putting theory into practice via their trifold presentations. Many participating students have had two separate experiences while others stayed at the same placement for both courses, each producing a rich and informative practicum experience.

As they’ve done in previous years, Falk students and their peers on campus, working with faculty and staff, have partnered with McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center to bring attention to the issue in a visual way: by planting pinwheels on campus. Recent research conducted by two Syracuse University faculty members, working collaboratively with community agencies, indicates the most important issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer-identified (LGBTQ) youth in the Central New York (CNY) community are bullying, family acceptance, self-acceptance, and having to leave home. Additionally, the two issues believed to most likely put LGBTQ youth at risk of homelessness are parental physical or emotional abuse and being forced to leave home because of LGBTQ identity. Sixteen students in Chef Chris Uyehara’s Pacific Island Fusion Cuisine hosted a luau on April 19 during a course-required workshop at the Lyman Hall Café and teaching kitchens. “Students learn about this culture by preparing and eating its foods,” Uyehara notes. During the course, students learn from Uyehara and from one another. At the end of each prepared meal, the students and instructor share it together. “It is the best way to learn about community and how to teach the next generation,” says Uyehara.
