Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with substance use, abuse, and dependence, making them an important public health concern. However, it’s necessary to understand more about the different types, timing, and frequency of ACEs, how they are differentially associated with substance use at different ages, and what mechanisms underlie these associations. This study will use 25 years of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to examine 1) How multidimensional profiles of ACEs are associated with substance use across adolescence and young adulthood; 2) How neurocognitive, mental health, and relational factors may explain these associations; and 3) What modifiable protective factors may moderate these associations and serve as areas for intervention.
