Four Falk students named 2016-17 Remembrance Scholars

Falk College students Kimberly Juarez (Nutrition Science), Paola Louzado-Feliciano (Public Health), Elaine Sartwell (Social Work), and Samantha Steinert (Public Health) were named 2016-17 Remembrance Scholars, along with 31 other Syracuse University seniors honored for their notable scholarship, citizenship, and service.

The Remembrance Scholarship is among the highest honors given to SU students. Each year, 35 seniors are selected in remembrance of the 35 Syracuse University students who, with 224 other passengers and eleven Lockerbie residents, tragically lost their lives in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 on December 21, 1988. The Scholars honor the lives of the 270 victims by educating the SU campus on issues of terrorism and strengthening the community through acts of service.

“Being selected as a Remembrance Scholar is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon a Syracuse University student,” said Michael Veley, Rhonda S. Falk Endowed Professor and director and chair of the Department of Sport Management. “It goes beyond recognizing high academic achievement. It encompasses civic engagement, citizenship and community service and the consummate body of work compiled by extremely intelligent and engaged students.”

Veley has served on the Remembrance Scholars Selection Committee for the past 10 years. “It is one of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career in higher education,” said Veley. “Annually, I am amazed by the exceptional academic quality and character of these extraordinary students. It is a fitting tribute to carry on the legacy of the 35 students who lost their lives in this tragic act of terrorism.”

This year’s Remembrance Scholars will participate in Remembrance Week 2016 events across campus October 23-29. The week will culminate, as it does each year, with the Rose-Laying Ceremony on Friday, October 28 at 2:03 p.m. at the Place of Remembrance, followed by the Remembrance Convocation at 3 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel with a reception immediately following to celebrating the Scholars’ achievement in Heroy Lobby beginning at 4 p.m.
