Elizabeth (Bette) Thoreck was an Associate Teaching Professor and Director of the BSW program in Falk College. Her service to the School of Social Work began when she joined the faculty in 1997 and after 21 years of service she retired in 2018. Professor Thoreck established herself as a teacher and leader in both the School of Social Work and Falk College. As Director of the BSSW Program, Professor Thoreck’s leadership skills were instrumental in shaping the school’s direction.

Her contributions have been recognized through numerous community and professional honors, including, the Madison County Community Services Board: “Floyd Bennett Mental Hygiene Advocacy Award” 2012; Rape Crisis Center Ten Year Volunteer Service Award 2004; the National Society of Collegiate Scholars Honorary Membership 2017 and the Chancellor’s Award for Public and Community Engagement: Inspiration Award 2014.

Professor Thoreck received both her BSSW and MSW from Syracuse University’s School of Social Work in 1992-1993. During this time she had received multiple student awards and recognitions. Over the years Bette has served as the Director of School of Social Work Continuing Education Program, Assistant Director of Field Instruction/Placement Coordinator, Baccalaureate Field Coordinator, and the Acting Director for the Yenawine Institute’s Corporate-Community Partnerships.

Beyond Syracuse University Bette has also served as the Upstate Medical University Office of Multicultural Resources Health Careers Opportunity Program Project Counselor, The Salvation Army Syracuse Area Services Director of School Based Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting Services as well as a Case Manager Supervisor: School Based Adolescent Pregnancy & Parenting Services.
