Critical Fat Studies: From the Academy to the Community

This free virtual seminar will examine fat studies both within the academy and outside it. Esther Rothblum, founder and editor of the Fat Studies Journal, and Joy Cox, author of “Fat Girls in Black Bodies,” will speak separately and then take questions together. You can come for any part of the morning’s events, but pre-registration is required.

Moderators:

Harriet Brown

Professor of magazine, news and digital journalism at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School and co-director for the fashion and beauty communications milestone. Brown has nearly 30 years of experience as both a writer and editor in magazines. She’s worked on two startup staffs—Wigwag and American Girl—as well as at magazines like Redbook and New York Woman, and writes for many nationals, including The New York Times Magazine, O Magazine, Vogue, Psychology Today, Prevention and Parenting.

Dr. Joy Cox

Author of “Fat Girls in Black Bodies,” and host of the Fresh Out the Cocoon podcast which showcases the lived experiences of fat Black womxn and femmes. Cox is the co-founder of Jabbie, an identity-inclusive, body affirming app.

Dr. Esther Rothblum

Professor Emerita of Women’s Studies in San Diego State University’s College of Arts and Letters. She is editor of the Journal of Lesbian Studies as well as the new journal Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society. Her research and writing have focused on LGBT relationships and mental health as well as the stigma of weight.
