The Falk College, in conjunction with two of its student organizations, Kappa Omicron Nu, the national honor society program for CFS majors at Syracuse University and the Syracuse University chapter of the Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE) worked together to raise awareness and money to support the McMahon-Ryan Child Advocacy Site during Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is commemorated in April. Last week the group collected donations for paper pinwheels and blue wristbands. On Sunday, April 13, the group planted the pinwheel garden in between the Schine Student Center and Newhouse.
Rachel Razza, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Child & Family Studies in the Falk College, was named a Syracuse University 2014 Teaching Recognition Award as part of the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professorship Program. This honor recognizes excellence in teaching innovation, effectiveness in communicating with students and the lasting value of courses. On April 14, the School of Social Work held its Phi Alpha Honor Society, Zeta Gamma Chapter, induction ceremony at Maxwell Auditorium. Nineteen undergraduate and 17 graduate social work students joined Phi Alpha this academic year. Professor of practice, Tracey Marchese, was the keynote speaker. Awards were presented by Bette Brown Thoreck, director, Baccalaureate social work program. The concept of a National Social Work Honor Society came from a group of undergraduates at Michigan State University. Dan Gorman ’15, 2013-14 president of the Sport Management Club, and Hannah Visnosky, ’16, vice president of community service, recently accepted the Student Organization Philanthropy Award at the 2014 “44 Stars of Excellence Gala.” The group was honored for philanthropy work raising and contributing funds for nationally recognized or local charities and agencies. The SPM Club held its 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction in December, raising $30,500 for Food Bank of Central New York.

Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Endowed Professor of Sport Management, was appointed as the University Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA effective July 1. The Faculty Athletics Representative reports to Chancellor Syverud and is an institutional liaison to Syracuse Athletics as well as a representative of the University in conference and NCAA matters. Key issues this position has focused on in the past include overall student-athlete welfare, compliance with new and ongoing NCAA legislation, and generally advocating for the best interests of the University and its constituencies.
