The Falk College today announced a new bachelor of science degree in Food Studies. The new program, which is now enrolling majors for Fall 2014, provides a thorough understanding of food systems, politics and economies from production to consumption locally, nationally and globally. Students develop marketable skills, such as data management and analysis, food preparation and presentation, and the ability and knowledge to link these skills to the growing interest in food systems. Openings are still available for the following Falk College study abroad programs this summer: HTW 400/600—Comparative Health Policy May 24-June 14, 2014 This six-credit undergraduate and graduate course will use a variety of modalities for students to learn about comparative health policies. Students will visit Geneva, Amsterdam, and Morocco to fully immerse themselves in settings that take different policy approaches to health problems. The Sport Management (SPM) Club at Syracuse University is excited to announce it raised $30,500 for Food Bank of Central New York at its 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction. During the SU men’s basketball game on December 7th, Food Bank supporters placed bids on hundreds of items, including sports memorabilia, electronics and tickets to major sporting events. Following the silent auction, the Club hosted an online auction, in collaboration with Steiner Sports Memorabilia, which showcased a number of premium items up for bid. In addition to his faculty role in the Falk College’s School of Social Work, Dr. Keith Alford is a member of the InterFaith Works Board of Directors and was the featured author of the Daily Inspiration column for a week in February 2014. The inspirations are connected to Prof. Alford’s research focus, which includes cultural diversity, mental health service delivery, contemporary rites of passage programming, and loss/grief reactions.
Rodney Paul, professor of sport management, and SPM students Matt Filippi, Greg Ackerman, and Zack Albright co-authored a research paper that will be presented at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference Feb. 28-Mar. 1 in Boston. Their research paper, “The Effects of Atmospheric Conditions on Pitchers,” studied the impact of air density on pitch selection and pitcher performance. It was one of sixteen papers selected (8 for presentation and 8 for posters) from more than 300 submissions worldwide. We would like to invite all interested CFS graduate students to participate in a monthly Research Colloquium that focuses on SEM. The seminar will include presentations, discussions around readings, and hands-on experience with AMOS software. Dr. Jaipaul L. Roopnarine was awarded a Nehru Distinguished Visiting Professorship at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda Gujarat, India, during the Spring 2014 semester.
