Rachel A. Razza, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Child and Family Studies, will be a featured presenter at the upcoming conference, “Executive Skills for School Success: Enhancing Self-Regulation, Reasoning and Working Memory.” The conference, which takes place May 3-5 in Arlington, VA, will explore the science of “executive function” and how to use teaching strategies, meditation, exercise and brain training to enhance working memory, attention, self-control, thinking, and visual-spatial skills to better prepare students for the future. As part of his coursework, student-athlete Kris Joseph, a child and family studies major and a senior forward on the SU Men’s Basketball team, is currently enrolled in CFS 433—Child Practicum. Taught by internship placement coordinator Colleen Baish, this semester-long practicum requires students to spend 90 hours in a school, agency, or program. “This is something I really enjoy doing, and it is fun,” notes Joseph. Phillip Thomas, a student in the Department of Child and Family Studies in the Falk College, is one of the SU football student-athletes assisting with the Youth Impact Program this summer for boys ages 9-12 from the Syracuse City School District. The five-week program sponsored by Syracuse University Athletics includes SU staff, student-athletes and local elementary teachers . Falk College faculty and current students welcomed potential graduate students interested in long-standing graduate programs in child and family studies, public health, marriage and family therapy, nutrition science and dietetics, and social work during a special Fall Information Session for graduate studies on Saturday, November 5 in Shemin Auditorium, Shaffer Art Building. Detailed information was provided on the College’s newest 36-hour graduate program: the M.S. in Global Health. Admissions was available at the information session to meet with students and provide information on academic programs, scholarships and housing.
To the beat of a steel drum band, Principal Clement Sankat, the head of administration for the University of the West Indies, shared his hospitality with the faculty, staff and students during the Child and Family Studies Trinidad/Tobago 2011 Spring Break. Meeting Principal Sankat was one of the many interesting and informative activities that the group experienced during this, the first CFS Spring Break in Trinidad/Tobago. Plans are underway for Spring Break 2012.
There’s a new character at Syracuse University, thanks to the efforts of two staff members at SU’s Early Education and Child Care Center (EECCC). Fran Paige, an assistant teacher at the center, is the author of a new children’s book, “Reagan McFagen,” which chronicles the adventures of a precocious young girl who likes to draw. Susan Campbell, also an assistant teacher at the center, is the illustrator.
