Several courses within the Falk College will benefit from a Bringing Theory to Practice grant aimed at studying the psychological and social well-being of college students. The Bringing Theory to Practice Project (BTtoP) awarded more than $700,000, including campus matching grants, to the colleges to address two key questions: How does learning on college campuses support the psychosocial development of students, and how and why does intentional commitment to the well-being of all students positively affect their learning and civic involvement? Students in the Department of Sport Management, led by instructor Pat Ryan, are traveling across Europe this May as part of the SPM Olympic Odyssey trip. Transforming the traditional classroom across geographies, time zones and cultures, this hands-on European exploration of the Olympic movement investigates the history of the ancient and modern Olympic Games and their influence on modern sport through in-depth study of Olympics sites. The group will visit London, Paris, Lausanne, Olympia and Athens.

Dan Gorman ’15, 2013-14 president of the Sport Management Club, and Hannah Visnosky, ’16, vice president of community service, recently accepted the Student Organization Philanthropy Award at the 2014 “44 Stars of Excellence Gala.” The group was honored for philanthropy work raising and contributing funds for nationally recognized or local charities and agencies. The SPM Club held its 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction in December, raising $30,500 for Food Bank of Central New York.

Rick Burton, the David B. Falk Endowed Professor of Sport Management, was appointed as the University Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA effective July 1. The Faculty Athletics Representative reports to Chancellor Syverud and is an institutional liaison to Syracuse Athletics as well as a representative of the University in conference and NCAA matters. Key issues this position has focused on in the past include overall student-athlete welfare, compliance with new and ongoing NCAA legislation, and generally advocating for the best interests of the University and its constituencies.
