Our 21 sport management majors and minors flying out to Los Angeles on Saturday, March 8 for a week-long immersion trip invite you to follow their blog. Students will keep you up-to-date on the various meetings, games, sites and attractions they will experience throughout the course of the immersion experience. It will be a busy, exciting and educational week exploring the sports industry on the west coast. Students will meet with executives and SU sport management alums from AEG, UCLA, ESPN, Santa Anita, The Dodgers, Mandalay, The Stub Hub Center and so much more.

The Sport Management (SPM) Club at Syracuse University is excited to announce it raised $30,500 for Food Bank of Central New York at its 9th Annual Charity Sports Auction. During the SU men’s basketball game on December 7th, Food Bank supporters placed bids on hundreds of items, including sports memorabilia, electronics and tickets to major sporting events. Following the silent auction, the Club hosted an online auction, in collaboration with Steiner Sports Memorabilia, which showcased a number of premium items up for bid. Rodney Paul, professor of sport management, and SPM students Matt Filippi, Greg Ackerman, and Zack Albright co-authored a research paper that will be presented at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference Feb. 28-Mar. 1 in Boston. Their research paper, “The Effects of Atmospheric Conditions on Pitchers,” studied the impact of air density on pitch selection and pitcher performance. It was one of sixteen papers selected (8 for presentation and 8 for posters) from more than 300 submissions worldwide. In the 1990s, many economists disdained sports economics as a field for specialization. But, as someone who had played and watched sports his whole life, Rodney Paul went against that advice he heard in graduate school. Paul had an extensive sports CV: playing basketball and baseball in high school, basketball and tennis in college; playing street hockey growing up, starting a club hockey team in graduate school; coaching basketball. Jaime Grillo started as an internship placement coordinator in Sport Management in December 2013. Previously, she worked as an academic counselor at Syracuse University in The College of Arts and Sciences. As an academic counselor she worked with a diverse population, ranging from students who are on academic probation to students who are pursuing Pre-Law and Pre-Health professions. During the Fall 2013 semester, sport management major/marketing studies minor, Steve Kozar, completed his 12-credit Sport Management Senior Capstone working for the NY/NJ Host Super Bowl Company Marketing Department for Super Bowl XLVIII, which will be held Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. He was selected for a prestigious internship with the Super Bowl Host Company Executive Department earlier in the summer. Sophomore sport management major, Brianna Butler, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Weekfollowing an MVP performance at the Paradise Jam while leading the Orange to three straight wins and the Reef Division title. She was additionally honored as espnW’s National Player of the Week.
