The Post-Standard and InterFaith Works of CNY coordinates a regular feature for its audiences entitled, Daily Inspiration. Dr. Keith Alford, associate professor of social work and member of the InterFaith Works Board of Directors, authored several inspirations in February, including a feature on February 8 where he reflects on stories of survival, hard times, triumph, happiness, and achievement through the pictures and captions in his family’s albums. Alford says, “we honor the diversity of our nation in recognizing February as Black History Month,” and references poet laureate Maya Angelou’s insights on the importance of knowing and making history.
WNBA president, Laurel Richie, will present “The WNBA: Showing the World What’s Possible,” as part of the University Lecture Series on Wednesday, March 18, 7:30 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. Richie is responsible for setting the vision for the WNBA and overseeing day-to-day business and basketball operations. Recently, she announced that the WNBA is launching a campaign to market specifically to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community, a move that makes it the first professional league to specifically recruit LGBT fans to its games. At the 2015 Special Olympics New York State Winter Games held in Syracuse, 22 students enrolled in Sport Management Professor Mary Graham’s required SPM 295 research methodology course surveyed event volunteers. For the second year, in collaboration with Stacy Eder, Director of Volunteer Management at Special Olympics New York State, Professor Graham’s class polled volunteers during the opening and closing ceremonies and at select athletic events. The students explored multiple facets of volunteer satisfaction, including training and preparation received prior to the events, what made experiences memorable, and whether volunteers would be likely to serve again. Last fall, Social Work Degree Guide published a listing of its “30 Most Influential Social Workers Alive Today.” Falk College Associate Professor of Social Work, Keith A. Alford, Ph.D., A.C.S.W., was listed ninth on this compilation that includes educators, activists, authors, and public servants. Sam Rodgers, a nutrition major in Falk College, is one of three Syracuse student-athletes recognized for his academic and athletic achievements with a post-graduate scholarship from the ACC. Rodgers was an AFCA Good Works Team honoree this season for his work in the community, which includes a pair of mission trips to Haiti with the group Poverty Resolutions. Rodgers was also named a Remembrance Scholar for this academic year at Syracuse, which is one of the highest awards a student at Syracuse University can receive. Orange Wrap students Mary Welkie, Laura Dragon and Rachel Mallory, provided samples of wild mushroom risotto to students in Sadler Dining Hall recently as part of the Healthy Monday’s ‘Try Me’ Initiative. Each month the “Try Me” campaign connects students to plant-based food alternatives that have health-promoting benefits. The project is a collaborative effort of Orange Wrap, SU Dining Services and the Healthy Monday ‘Meatless Mondays’ initiative. To address a growing need for more counselors, healthcare professionals and social services professionals with adequate training and credentialing in alcohol, other drugs and behavioral addictions, Falk College announced the creation of a 36-credit Master of Arts in Addiction Studies degree. The degree program provides students with opportunities to develop broad competencies in preparation for employment in a number of fields addressing alcohol, other drugs and behavioral (process) addictions.
