Graduate students in the Falk College’s Sport Venue and Event Management M.S. program traveled to Philadelphia Nov. 7-9 for a three-day field trip that included visits with various executives from the Philadelphia Phillies (MLB), Philadelphia Eagles (NFL), Philadelphia 76ers (NBA), Front Row Marketing and Aramark, a global leader in facilities and food services. A highlight of the field trip included attendance at a Philadelphia 76ers NBA game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The SPM Advisory Council is sponsoring an online auction to benefit SPM initiatives for undergraduate and graduate students. Proceeds raised will directly benefit undergraduate and graduate student initiatives for the Department of Sport Management in the Falk College, including (but not limited to): need-based financial assistance in support of research; scholarship; community service and civic engagement; travel to academic presentations; experiential learning opportunities; educational trips to network and learn from industry practitioners and a special needs fund to offset student emergencies.

SPM 101 students sleep overnight in cardboard boxes, collect personal care items to benefit Rescue Mission In the past year, an average of 235 people who might otherwise have been homeless stayed at the Rescue Mission shelter nightly. On October 10, 37 students enrolled in SPM 101—Personal and Social Responsibility—will sleep in cardboard boxes overnight on the SU Quad to raise awareness about homelessness. The results of a recently released study completed by a research team including Chad McEvoy, Falk College professor of sport management, provides athletic directors and other stakeholders of men’s college basketball programs a new tool to determine appropriate compensation for head coaches. The study, which was commissioned by Winthrop Intelligence, expands the traditional scope of executive compensation studies. The researchers investigated performance parameters that predict market compensation levels and utilized executive compensation practices applying multiple regression analysis to develop a compensation valuation formula. Jeff Pauline, Ed.D., assistant professor, Department of Sport Management, received a grant to identify methods for increasing physical activity among college students. The prevalence of obesity in the United States is at an all-time high. The time period young adults spend in college is viewed as a critical period of weight gain. Reduced physical activity coupled with increased sedentary activities, such as studying and computer use, and a change in eating habits, creates the perfect storm for gaining weight.
