CFS Students Visit Trinidad-Tobago & SPM Students Travel to LA For the second year in a row, students in both Child and Family Studies and Sport Management will participate in immersion programs related to their majors during Spring Break 2012. Students majoring in child and family studies will be traveling to Trinidad and Tobago to orient them to educational systems in these Caribbean areas. Sport management students will travel to Los Angeles, immersing themselves in the sport industry. The Syracuse University Chapter of Women in Sports and Events (WISE) presented “A Word to the WISE: Leveling the Playing Field,” at the first annual symposium which examined the obstacles and issues that students entering the professional world face, along with the skills and lessons necessary to overcome them and maximize their college experiences. As a result of its most successful annual Charity Sport Auction to date in December 2011, the Syracuse University Sport Management (SPM) Club made a $30,444 gift to the Upstate Cancer Center at Upstate Medical University during the SU Men’s basketball game vs. University of South Florida on February 22. The Syracuse University Sport Management (SPM) Club held its Seventh Annual Charity Sport Auction on Saturday, December 10 at the Carrier Dome. Silent bidding took place on hundreds of auction items, including sports memorabilia and hands-on experiences, electronics and tickets to major sporting events, during the SU men’s basketball game against George Washington. All the proceeds from this year’s auction went to benefit the Upstate Cancer Center. Items not sold in the December 10th Silent Auction were available in an After Action Sale until December 21st. Combining historically accurate military and espionage details, David B. Falk professor of sport management Rick Burton ’79 published The Darkest Mission. The novel follows the crew of a doomed 100th Bomb Group B-17 bomber through a 50-year odyssey targeting one of America’s most honored public figures. With a whirlwind plot, it falls to a South Boston detective, turning to an NFL-linebacker-turned-priest, to explain one clue (a Bible verse that does not exist). It leads to a series of gritty homicides and a puzzle-filled plot that ends with a blazing conclusion.
Sport management instructor Patrick Ryan serves as a community advisor for the Syracuse City School District’s Institute of Technology. This program is focused on developing the skills that will prepare Syracuse high school students for future careers in Central New York.
Falk College faculty and current students welcomed potential graduate students interested in long-standing graduate programs in child and family studies, public health, marriage and family therapy, nutrition science and dietetics, and social work during a special Fall Information Session for graduate studies on Saturday, November 5 in Shemin Auditorium, Shaffer Art Building. Detailed information was provided on the College’s newest 36-hour graduate program: the M.S. in Global Health. Admissions was available at the information session to meet with students and provide information on academic programs, scholarships and housing.
Gina Pauline, assistant professor, Department of Sport Management was recognized with the Syracuse University 2011 Teaching Award. The program recognizes excellence in teaching by non-tenured faculty and adjunct and part-time instructors. Recipients are selected for teaching innovation, effectiveness in communicating with students and the lasting value of courses. Pauline, joined the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics in August 2006. And in 2010, she was named David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics Faculty Member of the Year.
