Graduate Student Awards

The following awards recognize excellence among graduate students at Syracuse University. Some awards are specific to Falk College and more specifically within the Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS). Recognizing contributions of the most outstanding graduate students occurs annually, and is celebrated with an award ceremony at the end of each school year.

All University Doctoral Prize

Awarded annually to doctoral students in each of Syracuse University’s 11 schools and colleges who have demonstrated originality, contribution to the field, creativity, methodology, soundness, and quality of writing in their dissertation. Nominated by the HDFS faculty and the HDFS graduate committee (only 1 per department), chosen by Falk College committee.

Graduate School Marshal

Selection of our Graduate School Marshal is based on a review of nominees’ research and other academic accomplishments, as well consideration of the student’s past service to your department and the university. Nominated by the HDFS faculty and the HDFS graduate committee (only 1 per department), chosen by the Graduate School.

Graduate Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Work

self-nominated (Students are encouraged to self-nominate for the award, but only those with strong support from a faculty mentor in a letter of recommendation will receive full consideration.) Applications are welcome from graduate students in all disciplines and degree programs. Award decisions will likely favor students nearing completion of their degree since such students will have maximized their time to be productive scholars. Chancellor’s Citation Award for Excellence in Student Research

This award is intended for students who have, during their time at Syracuse, engaged in collaborative research that has the potential to make a deep and lasting impact on the greater society. Graduate School Master’s Prize

Awarded annually to master’s students in each of Syracuse University’s 11 schools and colleges who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and research in graduate study. Nominated by HDFS Faculty and HDFS Graduate Committee (only 1 per department), chosen by the Graduate School.

Graduate School Outstanding TA Award

Recognizes Teaching Assistants who have made distinguished contributions to Syracuse University by demonstrating excellence in significant instructional capacities, such as classroom teaching, laboratory or studio instruction, leading recitation or discussion sections, or assisting senior faculty members with high-enrollment courses. TAs are nominated by their departments and must present a teaching portfolio for review by a university-wide faculty selection committee. Nominated by the HDFS faculty and the HDFS graduate committee (only 1 per department), chosen by the Graduate School.

Alice Sterling Honig Award

Presented to a graduate student who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship in child development and family studies. Nominated by the HDFS faculty, chosen by the HDFS graduate committee.

Dean Edith Smith Endowed Dissertation Grant

Was established to provide financial support to facilitate the scholarship of doctoral students in the Department of Human Development and Family Science. The grant is designed to increase the flow of talented graduate students into academic careers and support HDFS students who show potential for excellence. Qualified students are invited by the HDFS faculty, chosen by the HDFS graduate committee.

HDFS Doctorate Award for Research Excellence

Given to a Doctoral student who has excelled in academic achievement, research practice and leadership activities. This student has also shown great potential for continued growth and contribution in the area of child and family studies to the department, college and university. Nominated by the HDFS faculty, chosen by the HDFS graduate committee.

HDFS Master’s Award for Research Excellence

Given to a Master’s student who has excelled in academic achievement, research practice and leadership qualities. This student has also shown great potential for continued growth and contribution in the area of child and family studies to the department, college and university. Nominated by HDFS Faculty, chosen by the HDFS Graduate Committee.

HDFS Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award

Given to a graduate demonstrating a strong commitment to teaching and learning. This student will have demonstrated exceptional skills and competence in assisting the HDFS faculty with undergraduate education. Nominated by HDFS Faculty, chosen by the HDFS Graduate Committee.
