Biography

My research, publications and teaching address racial, ethnic and gender-based health disparities in the Middle East, Northern Nigeria and urban areas in the United States. This work has been funded by 17 grants from HRSA, CDC, Office of Minority Health, and EPA, and other sources. I am first author or co-author on 35 peer reviewed journal publications, a book and numerous research reports, published abstracts and book chapters. In the Middle East and Northern Nigeria, my research has addressed the disproportionate mortality of women and girls, women's preventable death in childbirth, rural women's limited access to health resources, and female genital cutting. For the past 15 years I have worked with fellow faculty, community members and students on racial and ethnic health disparities in family and infant health. The environmental and social risk factors we have identified include food deserts being associated with low birth weight births, missing fathers linked with post neonatal infant death, childhood lead poisoning being associated with subsequent repeat teen pregnancies, and domestic violence as a risk for placental abruption. Most recently, I have facilitated student research in collaboration with a free clinic for the uninsured in Syracuse, New York where over 25,000 adults lack health insurance.
