Beginning with Maymester and spanning Summer Session I and II, Falk College will offer numerous courses for students on campus, as well as some online. In addition, Falk College will offer a series of one week courses during the summer in its Marriage and Family Therapy and Social Work programs. Dr. Alejandro Garcia recently received recognition for his outstanding service during his three-year term in office as Vice Chair/Secretary of the Council on Social Work Education, the accrediting association for baccalaureate and master social work programs in the United States. With Dr. Garcia were Dr. Carmen Ortiz Hendricks, the Dean of the Yeshiva School of Social Work and a CSWE board member who presented the award, and Dr. Barbara Shank, the chair of the board of directors.
In the next ten years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the profession of marriage and family therapy will grow at an unprecedented 30 percent rate, much faster than other occupations. And U.S. News and World Report recently listed marriage and family therapists as one of the top healthcare professions. In MFT 400, students will get a good feel for the profession of marriage and family therapy through topics including professional issues, major theories and techniques, and basic couple and family therapy skills. In January 2015, Sarah Skinner, a graduate student majoring in nutrition science in Falk College, secured a four- week unpaid internship with St. Vincent Sports Performance, a national and highly competitive nutrition internship with only four interns selected annually. For Sarah, the St. Vincent internship allowed her to get a real-world glimpse of her career goal of working with a sport team (professional or collegiate level). Falk College food studies students, led by assistant professor Evan Weissman, recently hosted chefs from Burma, Eritrea, Japan, South Sudan, and Somalia in the Falk College teaching kitchens in preparation for a recent My Lucky Tummy community dinner, which celebrates the local refugee and new American communities in Syracuse through food.
