Students, faculty, and staff, along with their friends and families, are invited to visit the Charity Sports Auction website to view and purchase more than 80 items ranging from jewelry, accessories, books and various classes, to autographed sports memorabilia and much more. In December, WCNY-TV’s “Cycle of Health” show featured assistant professor of food studies, Evan Weissman, an exploration of the history and growth of community gardens in Syracuse, as well as across New York State. A growing interest in where food comes from and how to cook it, along with many other factors, has spurred urban garden movements locally. In January 2015, Falk College begun its phased relocation to the new Falk Complex at MacNaughton and White Halls (the former College of Law). The Falk Complex, which includes both MacNaughton and White Halls, is located on the western portion of the Syracuse University campus. As part of Syracuse University’s Family Weekend 2014, Falk College hosted a Dean’s Breakfast in Lyman Hall that included several hundred students and families in attendance. In addition to a meet-and-greet with Falk College Dean Diane Lyden Murphy and faculty and staff, breakout sessions by each academic department allowed time for families to meet faculty one-on-one to ask questions specific to their student’s department.

Child and family studies Ph.D. student, Elif Dede Yildirim, working with Jaipaul Roopnarine, Ph.D., has received a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. The research project, “Paternal Factors and Childhood Outcomes: The Mediating Role of Relationship Quality and Support Networks,” offers great promise for state and local agencies that focus on preventing developmental risks to children that are attributed to challenging home and neighborhood environments. A standing-room-only audience of students, faculty and staff had the chance to hear the insights of Mark Bittman, one of the country’s best-known, most widely respected food writers. Bittman, who was in Syracuse as the featured speaker at the Rosamond Gifford Lecture on November 5, made a special trip to campus to meet with students in Falk College’s food studies and nutrition programs. Alejandro Garcia, Ph.D., was honored recently with the State Society on Aging of New York’s (SSANY) 2014 Advocate for Older Adults Award. The Advocate for Older Adults Award recognizes a record of planning, policy development and advocacy work.
