Quality Infant/Toddler Caregiving (QIC) Workshop

This workshop features the sixth annual The Jack Reilly Distinguished Lecture Series in Infant and Toddler Caregiving with guest Dr. Craig T. Ramey, Professor and distinguished research scholar from Virginia Tech Carillion Research Institute during a special session titled "Human Infancy: How Mastery Begins!" on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 7:00pm in the Community Folk Art Center, Syracuse, NY
Training caregivers of children under the age of three, the world-renowned QIC workshop is based on research and theory in social-emotional, cognitive, motor, sensory, and language development. This course consistently draws participants from around the world. Lectures include observations and interactions with real infants, as well as videos and demonstrations of developmentally appropriate toys and games. Lead faculty for the QIC workshop is Alice Sterling Honig, Ph.D., professor emerita of child development at Syracuse University, who has authored the following textbooks that are used in the QIC:
- Infant Care Giving: A Design for Training (with J.R. Lally)
- Talking With Your Baby: Family as the First School (with H. Brophy)
- Behavior Guidelines for Infants and Toddlers
- Playtime Learning Games for Young Children
- Nurturing Infant/Toddler Attachment in Early Care Settings
In 2010, Dr. Honig published, Little Kids, Big Worries: Stress-Busting Tips for Early Childhood Classrooms, a new guidebook for early childhood professionals to help them address common causes of stress in a young child’s life. She began teaching the QIC workshop more than 30 years ago. She is a licensed New York State psychologist and has authored and/or edited more than a dozen books and 500 articles and chapters. She has led childcare training throughout the United States and other countries, including South Korea, Singapore, France, China and Australia. Additional speakers will include: Tom Fiscoe, CPA, Vice President, Dannible & McKee Accounting; Ann Sveen, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and; Mary Anne Theiss, R.N., M.S., J.D.
Registration, Fees, Meal Plans and Housing:
The QIC may be taken for undergraduate or graduate credit, or audited (for all three options, Syracuse University tuition rates apply). A special rate of $550 is offered to child care providers who would like to attend the QIC for noncredit and receive 3.2 CEUs following completion of the workshop.
