As it does each year, the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies recognizes its students with awards for outstanding achievements in academics, research, service and other areas of scholarship. They have made great contributions in their areas of excellence, and we look forward to hearing about the value they contribute to the communities where they live and work. Epidemiologist David Larsen explains the science behind public masking recommendations amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Larsen, a professor in Falk College's Department of Public Health, studies patterns of sickness and disease in human populations. He is particularly interested in the outbreak of a novel strain of coronavirus because of its personal relevance.

On Wednesday, April 29, 2020, the Department of Human Development and Family Science gathered virtually to present awards to its undergraduate and graduate students, to induct new members into its academic honor society, and to celebrate all of the accomplishments of its students over the past academic year. This meeting was a modification to the usual in-person end of the year ceremony that was converted to a virtual ceremony this year in order to manage the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year Falk College is proud to have two Our Time Has Come Scholars (OTHC) who are a part of the Social Work program. The Our Time Has Come Scholarship (OTHC) creates possibilities for Black and Latino students at Syracuse University. To date, over 1,300 scholarships have been awarded. Jean L. Bowering, Ph.D., retired Syracuse University, Professor of nutrition, passed away April 1 in Ithaca, New York. Born in 1939 in Yonkers, New York, Dr. Bowering completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell University in 1960. There, she was a member of the sorority Chi Gamma.
